A French colony until 1954, this coastal town retains a number of colonial buildings.

In honour of the former Governor of Pondicherry who was a well known skilled administrator. This union territory which is "The Europe of India" is a popular weekend destination of the country. Statue of Dupleix was quartered inside the children's park located in beach road. Marquis Joseph Francois Dupleix was an integral part of Puducherry's soverign past to establish french rule in India. He was the governor of Puducherry between 1742 and 1754. Even though Dupleix left Puducherry in 1754, recognition for his contribution to french government came only in 1870 just then the statue was installed in pondicherry and other in France. This statue is a Epitome of Dupleix's glorius past. This union territory which is "The Europe of India" is a popular weekend destination of the country.
